Masjid Al Haram - Makkah

Masjid al-Haram, The Holy Mosque, is one of the oldest mosques in the history of Islam. It is in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, built to enclose The Holy Ka’bah. Masjid al-Haram is the largest mosque in the world and is capable of holding millions of worshipers at a time. As the primary location of Umrah and Hajj, it is always filled with Muslims from all over the world. Muslims, regardless of their race, color, or creed, stand in the Masjid al-Haram, which signifies unity in Islam.

It is also known as The Grand Mosque of Makkah and originally covered an area of 88.2 acres of land. It is the holiest place for Muslims on the face of the Earth. The Holy Mosque is exceptionally beautiful, with architectural landmarks all over the large area of the mosque. Millions of Muslims visit the Holy Masjid al-Haram to ask for forgiveness and to worship The Almighty. The Holy Ka’’bah stands in the center of the mosque, around which the circling ritual of Hajj and Umrah is performed.

Masjid al-Haram, according to the Quran, was built even before the creation of Mankind. It mirrors the place of Worship for angels from the heavens. The Holy Mosque is around the Bayt l-Ma’mur, “The Worship Place for Angels.” The Bayt l-Ma’mur is present right above the Holy Ka’bah, in the highest level of the Heavens, the Seventh Heaven. Above the Bayt l-Mamur, is the Great Throne of Allah Almighty.

According to the Gregorian calendar, the construction of Masjid al-Haram was started by Caliph Omar Ibn Al-Khattab in the seventh century. As the number of pilgrims was increasing continuously, the walls were rebuilt around the Holy Ka’bah later on. In 777, the original mosque was demolished in order to build a larger mosque around Holy Ka’bah to accommodate more pilgrims. There are many parts of the mosque that date back to 1571.

Some of the most important sites that lie in The Grand Mosque of Makkah are the Holy Ka’bah, The Black Stone present at the eastern corner of Kab’bah, The Station of Ibrahim, Safa, and Marwa, the two hills, and the Zam Zam well. Many areas of the Masjid al-Haram have been destroyed and reconstructed, but the Ka’bah is still the original structure that it was centuries ago.

It is the ultimate wish of every Muslim to visit the Masjid al-Haram at least once in their lifetime. People flock to the Holy City of Makkah to see the Holy Ka’bah and the Grand Mosque of Makkah from all over the world. Haramain offers vehicles to take you to the Masjid al-Haram when you are in Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah.
